A Journey from Conventional Medicine to Real Healing

Hi, I’m Dr Lynn McDonald, and my life’s work has been about helping people feel better. But my understanding of what that really means has changed dramatically over the years.

Like many doctors, I started my career with a deep passion for medicine. My grandfather was a doctor, and his sudden passing when I was just 11 years old left a profound impact on me. He dedicated his life to helping others, and I wanted to follow in his footsteps. From a young age, I was fascinated by the human body, how it worked, and how we could support it in healing.

I pursued medicine with everything I had, excelling academically and earning my place as a respected general practitioner. I trained in one of the most prestigious practices in Inverness, earned distinctions in my medical exams, and worked tirelessly to provide the best possible care for my patients. On paper, I was living the dream I had envisioned for myself as a child.

But reality wasn’t what I expected.

Despite working in an elite medical practice that prided itself on high standards and evidence-based care, I started noticing something disturbing—people weren’t getting better. I would see the same patients again and again, their conditions deteriorating over time.

Chronic illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, and autoimmune disorders were increasing, not decreasing. People were getting more obese, despite being given what we believed was the most sensible dietary advice.

And I began asking myself the question that—although I didn't know it at the time—would change the direction of my life...

"If medicine works, why is everyone still sick??"

I started to feel like an imposter. Despite all my training, my patients weren’t truly healing. Medicine was excellent at managing acute emergencies—stabilising a heart attack, saving a life in crisis—but when it came to long-term health, it felt like we were simply managing symptoms rather than addressing root causes. The revolving door of prescriptions and referrals wasn’t leading to lasting well-being.

My Own Health and Personal Struggles

At the same time, my own life was unraveling. I was juggling the intense demands of being a doctor with the pressures of raising a family (I had four children while I was working as a GP). I was navigating personal turmoil, including the breakdown of my marriage, financial stress, and the emotional toll of trying to keep everything together.

In 2012, I hit rock bottom. I was burned out, physically and emotionally exhausted, and struggling with the overwhelming feeling that I couldn’t continue on this path. I made the difficult decision to leave general practice—not because I didn’t love medicine, but because I no longer believed in the way it was being practised.

Walking away from the career I had dedicated my life to was terrifying. I had no plan, no clear direction on what was next. But I knew one thing: I had to find a better way.

Discovering Real Health

When I left conventional medicine, I started searching for answers—ones that I had never been given in medical school. I trained in hypnotherapy, NLP (neuro-linguistic programming), and emotional freedom technique (EFT), looking for ways to help people beyond prescriptions. But it wasn’t until I began researching nutrition and metabolic health that everything started to click into place.

I had struggled with my own health for years—fluctuating weight, energy crashes, and hormonal imbalances. Like many people, I had tried countless diets, followed conventional advice about “healthy eating,” and still found myself stuck in cycles of fatigue and frustration. But then, I stumbled upon a truth that medical school had never taught me:

Food is medicine. And the right food can help your body to heal in ways that no pharmaceuticals ever could.

I learned about the devastating effects of sugar and processed foods, the importance of nutrient-dense animal products, and how conventional dietary advice was often completely backward. I experimented with low-carb, keto, and eventually found the carnivore diet—an approach that changed everything for me. I experienced firsthand what true health felt like, and I wanted to help others do the same.

From Doctor to Health Advocate: Empowering Others to Take Control

Leaving conventional medicine didn’t mean leaving my mission behind—it meant transforming it. I no longer wanted to be just another doctor writing prescriptions. I wanted to empower people to take control of their own health, to question outdated medical dogma, and to embrace a more holistic, evidence-based approach to well-being.

Today, I work with individuals who are ready to reclaim their health. I teach people how to nourish their bodies with real food, how to reset their metabolism, and how to break free from the cycle of chronic illness. My goal is to provide real solutions, not just symptom management.

I believe that:

  • The body knows how to heal—we just need to give it the right tools.
  • Nutrition is the foundation of health—and much of what we’ve been told about “healthy eating” is wrong.
  • Mainstream medicine often treats symptoms, not root causes—and we can do better.
  • Healing is holistic—it’s about physical health, mental clarity, and emotional well-being.
